As a certified instructor through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (icisf.org), I train agencies and groups implementing crisis response teams. Those teams are then equipped to mitigate the impact of professional and personal stressors inherent in those professions (cumulative stress, traumatic stress, etc.)
In 2018, I retired as a Lead Firearms and Tactics Instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Charleston, SC. I spent most of my 24 years of federal service as a United States Probation Officer in the Northern District of Illinois, Chicago, where I served in numerous capacities. During most of my law enforcement career I served as a law enforcement trainer specializing in firearms, defensive tactics, mental health, and trauma management. Having an extensive background in the mental health field, I became involved in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) in 2009, following the shocking suicide of a friend/colleague. Since then, promoting wellness within the first responder community and other professions has been my top priority. I have published articles in two international journals on the topic of CISM Peer Support.
I have developed CISM policies and procedures for multiple federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, and served as Coordinator for the CISM Team at the FLETC in Charleston, SC and in the Northern District of Illinois. As a certified instructor through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) since 2012, I have provided CISM training and interventions to a multitude of law enforcement/first responder communities. In 2018, I established my consulting business, Elias Consulting, LLC, providing wellness training to a variety of disciplines on the topics of Critical Incident Stress Management, Peer Support, and Suicide.
In addition to providing wellness training, I serve as a law enforcement chaplain and trainer for the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team’s Strategic Chaplain Ministry headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, providing emotional and spiritual training and care to law enforcement personnel in the immediate aftermath of man-made and natural disasters.
I reside with my wife, Melissa, in Westerville, Ohio.

Course Description:
Most psychological crisis intervention is done one person to one person, rather than in groups. These interactions may be face-to-face (in person or electronically), telephonic, via email, or even via text messaging. The SAFER-R model of individual psychological crisis intervention was developed to serve as a simple protocol or procedural guide to aid in conducting such individual psychological crisis interventions. This two-day course builds upon, and is the logical continuation of, the basic ASSISTING INDIVIDUALS IN CRISIS course. Using the SAFER-R framework as a platform, participants are introduced to scenario-based variations of the model. Topics such as advanced psychological triage, grief, suicide intervention, challenges in follow up and referral, and self-care are addressed. In addition, participants are asked to evaluate pre-recorded video examples of crisis intervention using the SAFER-R model.
*Prerequisite: Assisting Individuals in Crisis
